TEACHING APPROACH

My name is Sendy and I facilitate learning music through enjoyment and creativity, directed by the goals and interests of students.

Exploration and learning is facilitated through a holistic combination of technique, theory, ear-training, rhythm and general musicality directly relevant to student goals. I aim to support through an approach that is kind, respectful, positive, engaging, stimulating and flexible. Over many years, I have observed that each student is unique, with different experiences, learning styles, tendencies, habits and personalities. Consequently, rather than teaching by one fixed method, I draw from various methods including, but not limited to, Montessori, Yamaha, Suzuki and educational kinesiology. I believe it is important to balance methodic structure with organic flexibility and practical application that is directly and immediately relevant to students.

MUSIC/TEACHING EXPERIENCE

For as long as I remember, I have been making music. My musical experience is outlined below:

  • Began playing piano at age 3.

  • Trained under various private teachers and educational systems including Montessori and Yamaha.

  • Offered places at the Sydney Conservatorium High School and Newtown School of Performing Arts.

  • Sang in various choirs including the Australian Youth Choir and the NSW Public Schools Singers with whom I toured the US at the age of 15, performing at venues including the Kennedy Centre (Washington, D.C.), St Patrick's Church (New York City) and Disneyland (Anaheim).

  • Completed all 8 grades in AMEB Pianoforte and 4 grades in AMEB Musicianship.

  • At the HSC level, I gained a place on the Distinguished Achievers List for music (top HSC band in NSW).

  • Commenced jazz voice training in 2006 privately and at the Australian Institute of Music. Teachers include Lily Dior and Tamara Waitodas.

  • Completed various courses at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Open Academy including SIMA's 2012 Young Womens' Jazz Workshop (voice) and Jazz Improvisation (piano) in 2013.

  • Graduate Certificate of Music (Contemporary Performance) majoring in voice - Australian Institute of Music

  • Other instrumental experience includes the melodica, acoustic guitar, violin, Tibetan singing bowl, etc.

My teaching experience spans over 20 years internationally with students of all ages ranging from age 3 to adult, in individual and group environments both privately and institutionally. I have a Montessori Teacher's Assistant (6-12) qualification, and speak English, Mandarin, Taiwanese and intermediate Italian.
